SLOOP : operational simulation software

Construct an oil and gas field model or process, then simulate the operation over time.

BMT-SLOOP is used to investigate the operational risk and economic performance of entire offshore developments.  The model is repeated many times using different records.  Other random events such as equipment failure, resource availability, and vessel delays may also be included in the model.

After the simulations are complete, statistical data can then be analysed for all aspects of the reproduction.

Results can also be directly interfaced with field economic models.

Weather conditions

BMT SLOOP helps to simulate:

  • The time it takes to install and commission a platform
  • The time it takes to drill and complete a well
  • The effect of weather on export operations
  • The impact of weather on maintenance
  • Production estimates and operational costs

SLOOP is an operational modelling and simulation tool for offshore and marine applications, primarily for oil & gas.

It can be applied in many areas, including:

  • Productivity & maintenance of offshore oil & gas fields
  • Oil & gas field installation & development
  • LNG (or CNG) production & transportation
  • Shuttle tanker operations
  • Renewable energy

SLOOP can model an entire operation, or any specific aspect, as appropriate to the study in question.  Use SLOOP to:

  • To determine expected performance
Simulation is often the only approach if there are complex interactions
  • To optimise a design
Assess the effect of changing a component of the design and see what effect it has
  • To compare alternate designs
Try different solutions and see which performs best
  • To determine variability
The viability of a solution may not be determined by the ‘average’ performance, but by how bad things might get.

Product features

  • Constructing a numerical model of a planned operation or development.
  • The model includes disruptions or delays due to metocean conditions and possible failures.
  • Presentation of statistics on performance.
  • The most significant benefits can come before too many decisions are set in stone.
  • Simulation models are relatively quick and easy to change.
  • Details can be added as the project evolves.

Product benefits

  • An inbuilt understanding of critical components
  • Fast to build models (do not have to specify all details)
  • Quick to run (can study more cases)
  • Rational and traceable decision basis
  • An integrated model of operation assists project overview and vision
  • Highlight sensitivities to uncertainties – focus project effort where it is needed
