Worldwide, 2.5 billion people (40% of the world’s population) live within 100 km of the coast, increasing pressure on coastal ecosystems.

Coastal development impacts may be directing such as landfilling, dredging, and coral and sand mining for construction, or indirect, such as increased run-off of sediment and pollutants.

The construction of a variety of infrastructures such as properties (commercial and residential), roads, ports, and breakwaters completely dominate the natural habitats and leads to further rapid coastal damage.
