Floating offshore wind

Offshore wind

Supporting offshore wind farm developments from initial scoping to final decommissioning.

Throughout the lifecycle of an offshore wind farm from the initial scoping to the final decommissioning we support all phases with an extensive range of specialist products and services.

Feasibility and Financing

Scoping a suitable site location for an offshore wind farm requires a good understanding of the conditions at the proposed site. Many elements need to be considered to assess the condition and impact on local people and the environment. We assist with early engagement studies to assess the risk from metocean conditions and environmental impacts to assessing the impact of construction traffic on port infrastructure. Our services include:

  • Metocean Data and Studies
  • Environmental Studies
  • Navigational Assessments and Vessel Traffic Studies
  • Port Availability
  • Levelised Cost of Energy Analysis

Planning and Permitting

To assess the renewable resource we offer a number of studies to determine environmental conditions and the potential environmental impact, and assist with permitting requirements. As the developments move offshore and the turbines become much larger/intricate in design, port assessment studies become more important. Our risk based studies support foundation assessments of turbines, offshore substation transport and installation. Our services include:

  • Metocean Data and Studies
  • Environmental EIA's
  • Bird, marine mammal studies
  • Noise impact assessment
  • Navigational Assessment and Vessel Traffic Studies
  • Port Availability
  • Grid design/engineering
  • Specialist engineering studies

Installation and Construction

Installation and construction of offshore wind farms requires a wide range of specialist marine operations. With our extensive knowledge of ships, shipping, ports and port operations backed up by a detailed understanding of the harsh marine environment,  BMT provides planning and real time support to such marine operations. Our services include:

  • Marine Warranty Survey Services
  • Navigational Assessment
  • Vessel Traffic Studies
  • Port Availability

Operation & Maintenance

For essential maintenance and routine inspections of offshore assets, BMT is a leader in Crew Transfer Vessels (CTV) and active fender systems but we also provide essential integrity monitoring services of these assets whether they are fixed or floating. Our services include:

  • Metocean Operability and Data
  • Vessel Design (CTVs)
  • Active Fender Systems
  • Structural Integrity Assessments (inc. condition monitoring, corrosion, finite element analysis)
  • Marine Inspection (inc. drone surveys)
  • Data management/digital twin
  • Operational Simulation
  • Vessel Simulation

To improve efficiencies of offshore decommissioning operations, our operational simulation and metocean studies assess the impact of weather downtime and our environment studies support the monitoring of the environment, understanding of environmental impacts and satisfy regulatory obligations.  We combine our experience of coastal and marine environments, knowledge of regulatory requirements and project management expertise to support your objectives. Our services include:

  • Environmental support/secondment to decommissioning projects
  • Seabed environmental survey design
  • EIA Scoping Reports
  • EIA and Comparative EIA
  • Comparative Assessment
  • Decommissioning Programme
  • Consultation advice and support
  • Advice and support with regulatory compliance
  • Environmental permits, licences and consents
  • Waste management strategy and planning
  • Management of cutting piles
