TasPorts supports critical marine services and infrastructure across Tasmania. Periodic maintenance dredging is required at the Port of Devonport to maintain navigable depths and support the safe and reliable operation of the port.
How do you establish a long-term environmental approvals framework for maintenance dredging while balancing environmental protection, regulatory requirements and operational needs?
TasPorts required a long-term approvals and environmental management framework for repeat maintenance dredging and offshore placement of dredged material. The programme needed to address sediment quality, turbidity, sensitive receptors, introduced marine species and regulatory requirements, while establishing practical controls and monitoring arrangements for delivery.
BMT provided embedded environmental and project support from planning through delivery. This included sediment investigations, marine habitat and introduced marine species surveys, dredge plume modelling and impact assessment, environmental management planning, sea dumping permit support and regulator engagement, together with compliance monitoring, adaptive management and post-dredge reporting.
The work secured a 10-year sea dumping permit and environmental management framework for maintenance dredging at the Port of Devonport and supported delivery of the 2026 campaign through transparent monitoring, documented compliance and evidence-based adaptive management. TasPorts now has a repeatable approach for future campaigns that supports safe navigation, environmental protection and regulatory confidence.
