As trade demand increased, a new greenfield port was proposed to support future economic growth. Before construction could begin, decision-makers needed confidence that the port would be safe, operationally effective and capable of supporting future vessel traffic.
How should a new port be designed to accommodate future vessels, maintain safe navigation and optimise dredging investment while ensuring operational efficiency from day one?
Using BMT REMBRANDT simulation technology, BMT evaluated vessel movements, port operability, navigation requirements and dredging options to assess future performance and support key infrastructure decisions. The analysis enabled stakeholders to understand trade-offs, reduce uncertainty and optimise the port design before implementation.
The work enabled stakeholders to determine optimal channel depths, vessel requirements and operational parameters before construction. By reducing uncertainty and testing options before implementation, BMT helped deliver a future-ready port design with greater confidence in both investment and operational decisions.

We carried out comprehensive oceanographic modelling to develop the design conditions at various mooring sites in Dampier port and Mermaid Sound.
The study resulted in a coherent transshipment solution including optimal barge loading equipment, barge capacity and fleet size required to meet port throughput requirements of approximately 1.2 Mtpa.
We designed the port as multi product facility that could handle both import and export of bulk products, livestock export and possibly Ro-Ro traffic.
