Understanding collision risk from future vessel growth

Marine traffic simulation assessed how increased cruise and ferry movements from new facilities could affect future collision risk at the entrance to the bay.

Requirement

Cruise Bay already experienced significant activity from cruise liners and local ferries.

New facilities were expected to increase vessel movements, creating a need to understand how future traffic growth could affect navigational safety and collision risk at the entrance to the bay.

Solution

We applied dynamic marine traffic simulation to examine the impact of increased vessel activity and assess collision risk within the entrance to the bay.

Benefits

The modelling allowed the safety implications of future traffic growth to be investigated as part of the development planning process, providing quantitative evidence to help inform decisions about the safe operation of the expanded facilities.
