Managing marine risk during major infrastructure construction

Stonecutters Bridge, Hong Kong – Marine traffic simulation assessed the navigational risk and potential vessel delays associated with major bridge construction activities at a busy container port entrance.

Requirement

Construction activity associated with Stonecutters Bridge involved lifting deck units from barges within the entrance to the Kwai Chung container terminals.

The potential impact of these operations on navigation safety and the movement of ocean-going vessels needed to be understood.

Solution

We used dynamic marine traffic simulation to model vessel movements around the port entrance and investigate how the proposed lifting operations could affect existing marine traffic.

Benefits

The simulation enabled the potential increase in navigational risk to be assessed before the operation took place, while also examining potential delays to ocean-going vessels.

This provided evidence to support safer planning of major construction activity within an exceptionally busy marine environment.
