Jaret Fattori: driving climate risk consulting and environmental innovation at BMT in Canada

Why I joined BMT

I’ve been with BMT for three years now as, initially as a Senior Consultant and eventually as Programme Director for Climate and Environment, based out of the Kanata office in Ottawa.

What drew me was the opportunity to join a new team focused on climate risk. The company was building its global capability in this space, and it aligned perfectly with my technical interests and ambition to grow professionally. The global and local support helped to foster a collaborative environment to establish the new capabilities and offering.

How my role has grown

Since joining, my role has evolved a lot. I started by leading climate risk efforts in Canada, but we quickly saw an opportunity to build on BMT’s strong global experience in environmental services. The goal was to capitalise on that depth of expertise and establish a stronger presence in Canada - translating proven capability into new opportunities in a growing market.

What really stood out was the trust I was given. There’s a lot of freedom to explore opportunities, talk to new customers, and shape what we offer based on real needs. In previous companies, things were much more top-down. Here, if something makes sense, people back you. That level of trust isn’t common.

A standout project

One standout project was for an aquaculture development in Eastern Canada. With limited local regulatory guidance, we applied Scottish Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) standards to model more thoroughly the environmental impacts of different treatment strategies. The customer wanted to exceed mandatory analysis and lead in environmental performance, and our work helped them do that.

The modelling also gave them operational insight, revealing how activity at one site affected others downstream. That’s now informing better internal decisions and siting decisions for new farm locations. We partnered with our team in Australia - who’d done similar work in Scotland - and their expertise was key.

"One of BMT’s real strengths is the ability to pull together teams from across regions. That kind of smooth, cross-regional collaboration isn’t something you find everywhere, and it makes a big difference to the quality and impact of our work."

What makes BMT different

The level of autonomy given also goes hand-in-hand with flexibility. I live in Kingston and work remotely, which makes it much easier to manage calls with teams in different time zones. You couldn’t collaborate at this level without that kind of setup. It’s not about being online 9 to 5 - it’s about delivering results.

If you’re considering applying to BMT, I’d say this: your expertise will be respected, and you’ll have real autonomy in how you work and what you work on.

You’re surrounded by people with deep experience in their fields, and you’re trusted to make decisions. That combination of trust, flexibility, and collaboration is what makes working here so rewarding.
