Ewan is Head of our Management Consultancy capability across the UK and Europe, leading the delivery of P3M, business strategy and transformation, costing, and training outcomes for government and industry customers. With a background that bridges engineering and project delivery, he is a versatile and proactive leader who thrives on refining and optimising the processes and tools through which complex projects and transformation programmes succeed.
His technical discipline lies in portfolio, programme and project management and control, with substantial experience leading and advising on high-value, high-risk initiatives across defence, government and regulated sectors. Over his career, Ewan has developed deep expertise in organisational change, design, delivery and assurance - skills gained through supporting and leading teams in fast-moving environments where ambiguity and uncertainty dominate. His work spans organisational design, programme assurance, through-life planning and the optimisation of delivery frameworks. Drawing on systems thinking and structured management approaches, he is routinely engaged in environments where novelty, volatility and complexity demand adapted ways of working - ensuring organisations deliver the right outputs to cost, quality and schedule.
Bringing clarity to complex programmes
BMT supports UK government customers with many programmes of national importance. These programmes are inherently complex, combining cutting-edge technology, security considerations and schedule pressure. Ewan’s philosophy of “bringing clarity to complexity” is central to how he supports them. By establishing the right programmatic framework and applying structured management practices, his work ensures that customers can navigate uncertainty, reduce risk and maximise value - for taxpayers, industry partners and the public.
As economic pressures rise and new technologies transform how organisations operate, customers are increasingly required to deliver more for less - and often much faster. While internal project management capability is growing, complex or transformational programmes require broader skills that combine systems thinking, adaptive approaches and the ability to tailor delivery methods to the environment. Ewan anticipates continued growth in demand for these consultative programme management skills, enabling organisations to transition successfully without overextending their in-house teams.
Supporting our customers
Ewan emphasises acting as a “customer’s friend” - a trusted partner offering clarity, pragmatism and assurance. He focuses on avoiding unnecessary complication while helping customers prepare for how they need to deliver in the future. By providing straightforward guidance, practical programme support and knowledge transfer, his aim is always the same: empower organisations to deliver sustainably and confidently long after our involvement ends.
"My goal is to bring clarity to complexity - helping organisations deliver meaningful outcomes through structured, sustainable programme management."
Fellowship focus: strengthening project management practice nationally
Ewan’s Fellowship work is centred on advancing project management practice across the UK through his involvement with the APM Planning, Monitoring & Control Interest Network. While not a traditional research project, his contribution has resulted in a dozen APM publications and guidance documents - ranging from senior manager guides to earned schedule analysis guidelines, critical chain guidance, and the landmark Project Controls for the 21st Century handbook, the most comprehensive volume the APM has ever produced. His ambition is to improve project delivery outcomes nationally, informed by the insights gained from complex programmes we support and directed toward building a trusted, consistent body of guidance for the profession.
Collaboration and progress
Ewan works closely with a multi-sector APM network spanning government, defence, aerospace, construction, energy and transport - reflecting his belief that good practice develops through shared learning and collaboration. Within BMT, he encourages colleagues to actively engage with professional bodies, helping promote excellence in project management while strengthening our presence in the wider discipline. Looking ahead, he is exploring how emerging areas - such as AI, data analytics and adaptive delivery models - will shape next-generation project control frameworks.
Why Ewan values the Fellowship
As a Head of Capability, time to delve into new topics can be limited. The Fellowship gives Ewan dedicated space to pursue ideas that benefit both us and the wider industry. It enables him to share his expertise, mentor others, and support the next wave of innovation in programme delivery. Most importantly, it allows him to champion the capability within our teams while contributing meaningfully to the development of project management practice across the UK.
