Fellows spotlight

Eshan's Fellowship research explores how AI and autonomy can be applied to vessel operations and offshore infrastructure inspection, helping customers navigate complex technology adoption and unlock new efficiencies.

Research focus: Increasing the availability of autonomous systems

Eshan Rajabally’s Fellowship research explores two distinct but complementary areas within maritime autonomy:

  • Allocation of Function (AoF) – a structured approach to determining which tasks on sea-going vessels are best performed by humans versus machines. This work updates traditional human factors frameworks to reflect the evolving role of autonomy in maritime operations, helping customers design systems that are both efficient and safe.
  • Drone Route Optimisation – focused on improving the deployment of inspection drones for offshore infrastructure, particularly in the rapidly expanding offshore wind sector. This research aims to reduce operational costs and risks by enhancing the precision and efficiency of condition monitoring.

These projects address real-world challenges faced by our customers, such as the need to scale autonomous operations while maintaining safety and reliability, and the demand for smarter inspection solutions in harsh environments. By demystifying enabling technologies like AI and providing expert guidance, Eshan helps clients navigate the complexity of autonomy adoption and avoid common pitfalls.

His work is highly collaborative, drawing on internal expertise in human factors, AI, and offshore wind, as well as academic partnerships. The AoF research is currently in the survey and scoping phase, identifying best practices and promising directions. The drone optimisation project is in its early stages, with a compelling case study already identified.

"I’ve learnt that personal conviction behind any research topic is the stand-out prerequisite for success."

Eshan’s motivation stems from a career-long passion for cutting-edge R&D and a belief in the transformative potential of intelligent systems. As a BMT Fellow, he values the opportunity to shape high-impact research, mentor emerging talent, and contribute to our strategic growth through innovation.
