Fellows spotlight

Dr Tom Beard leads our clean shipping agenda, guiding the maritime industry through the transition to safe, efficient and future-ready alternative fuels.

Technical expertise

Tom’s discipline spans clean maritime systems with a particular focus on alternative fuels such as hydrogen and ammonia. With deep experience in hydrogen safety and fuel system engineering, he supports customers through transition planning, fuel production and storage strategies, operational risk considerations and pathways to compliance. His work brings together engineering expertise, regulatory insight and practical industry knowledge to guide organisations at every stage of their decarbonisation journey.

For Tom, clean maritime is not just a growing business domain - it is essential to ensuring a viable planet for future generations. As the maritime sector works toward ambitious IMO, EU and UK net-zero mandates, we must remain at the forefront of alternative fuel technologies and advisory services. Tom’s leadership positions us as a trusted partner for organisations navigating the technical, environmental and economic complexities of clean shipping.

A rapidly expanding area

Tom anticipates significant growth across clean maritime in the coming years as global regulations tighten and the industry transitions from energy-efficiency measures toward widespread adoption of novel fuels. With national and international policy shifts accelerating this transition, vessel operators will increasingly require expert guidance to understand safety implications, environmental benefits, operational impacts and long-term financial considerations.

Supporting our customers

Our Clean Shipping team provide technical advisory services covering fuel transition strategies, production and storage solutions, vessel integration options, and safety and environmental assessments. Tom recognises that customers are at different stages of their decarbonisation journey- some well advanced, others still learning what clean fuels mean for their operations. His role is to provide clear, evidence-based guidance that helps organisations make confident, informed decisions.

Collaboration at the heart of his work

Tom collaborates widely across BMT and the broader clean maritime ecosystem. His engagement with industry groups, academic institutions and internal technical teams ensures we remain connected to emerging research, regulatory developments and best practice. This collaborative approach strengthens our capability and supports customers with well-rounded, future-ready insights.

"Clean maritime isn’t just a business opportunity - it’s about ensuring a sustainable future, and helping our customers navigate that transition with confidence."

What being a BMT Fellow means to Tom

For Tom, the Fellowship is both recognition and responsibility. It provides opportunities to deepen his expertise, expand his global network and support junior engineers developing their own careers. Above all, it enables him to push our clean maritime capability forward - aligning expertise, thought leadership and technical delivery with the company’s ambition to lead in sustainable maritime solutions.
