Fellows spotlight

Dr Louise Bruce is developing next-generation environmental information models that help customers visualise future scenarios and plan more sustainably.

Technical expertise

Louise’s background combines environmental engineering with numerical modelling, enabling her to use data, mathematics and simulation tools to understand environmental processes at depth. For customers, this means evidence-based insights into how operational changes, mitigation measures or restoration strategies will influence their environmental footprint - both now and into the future.

Why this matters to our customers

Our customers are increasingly focused not only on minimising environmental impacts but also on designing for sustainable, regenerative outcomes. Louise’s work provides the virtual test bed they need to make informed decisions. Through detailed environmental models, customers can explore how adjustments to operations or development plans will affect ecological systems and compliance pathways, while also identifying opportunities for restoration and long-term improvement.

A growing focus on digital environmental futures

The field is rapidly evolving as customers seek more intuitive, visual, and forward-looking digital tools. Louise sees the biggest growth ahead in the digitisation of environmental understanding - tools that allow customers to see and interact with possible futures, shifting from reactive responses to proactive planning. With richer visualisation, advanced modelling, and customer-friendly interfaces, environmental decision-making becomes clearer, faster and more impactful.

Louise emphasises her multidisciplinary strength: combining numerical modellers, environmental specialists, regulatory experts, design engineers and software developers into a cohesive team. By deeply understanding customer challenges, constraints and long-term aspirations, we deliver practical, realistic, evidence-based scenarios that build trust and support confident decision-making. This iterative, collaborative approach - often involving regulators, universities, and even competitors - helps ensure robust outcomes that stand up to scrutiny.

"By bringing data, models and visualisation together, we can help customers shift from reacting to environmental change to confidently shaping a more sustainable future."

Research focus: environmental information models for sustainable development

Louise’s Fellowship project 'Development of Environmental Information Models for Sustainable Development', brings together three key elements:

  • Environmental data already collected or planned for collection,
  • Numerical models that simulate environmental behaviour, and
  • Interactive visualisation tools that allow customers to explore outcomes intuitively.

By unifying data, models and visualisation, these environmental information models help customers understand cause-and-effect pathways, test scenarios and plan sustainably at both project and systems levels.

Her work delivers benefits on multiple levels:

  • For customers: clear guidance for reducing environmental impact, planning sustainable development, and identifying opportunities for ecological restoration.
  • For society: a systems-level understanding of environmental cause and effect, supporting a shift from reactive responses to proactive stewardship.
  • For BMT: deeper collaboration across global teams, expanded digital modelling capability, and meaningful opportunities for early-career engineers to contribute innovative ideas.

Collaboration at the heart of the work

Louise’s projects draw on our global network across the UK, US, Canada, Singapore and Australia, integrating environmental science, design engineering, modelling expertise and software development. Externally, she works closely with customers, regulators and universities - ensuring the latest science guides our models and that regulatory bodies understand and align with emerging techniques.

What inspires Louise

Driven by her passion for environmental protection and her love of solving complex puzzles, Louise thrives on uncovering patterns in data and translating them into actionable insights. The BMT Fellowship programme provides the time, support and collaborative community to elevate her work - turning great ideas into practical tools that help customers plan for a more sustainable future.
