When I look back at my own journey into engineering, I realise how much difference a spark of inspiration can make. For me, it was seeing how science and creativity could come together to solve real problems. That spark set me on a path to becoming a Naval Architect, and today, as STEM Lead, I want to help others find their own spark.
STEM at the heart of BMT
We see STEM as the heartbeat of everything we do. Whether it’s designing safer ships, developing technologies for a changing climate, or creating innovative solutions for our customers, STEM is where the ideas are born and where they come to life. But equally important is who gets to take part in that journey. That’s why diversity, equity, and inclusion are central to our approach. I’m especially passionate about showing girls and young women that they belong in engineering and maritime. These sectors need their voices, their perspectives, and their talent.
Inspiring the next generation
Outreach plays a huge role in making that happen. Last year, alongside my colleagues, I had the privilege of helping to run seven STEM events, welcome 10 students into work experience placements, and collaborate with 12 schools. We also engaged more than 30 BMT colleagues who volunteered their time and expertise. Each interaction, whether at a careers fair, a classroom workshop, or through mentoring, was a chance to open doors and widen horizons.
"Some moments stand out, like taking part in the Bath Royal Literary and Scientific Institution exhibition, where over 200 people came together to celebrate curiosity and innovation. Or seeing young faces light up at New Scientist Live, where we’ve begun to connect with audiences on a truly national scale. Those are the times you realise just how powerful STEM can be in shaping futures.
For me, this isn’t about statistics; it’s about people. It’s about the student who suddenly sees engineering as a possibility, or the young woman who says, “I didn’t know I could do this - but now I think I can.” That’s why we do it.
Looking ahead, my focus is on growing these opportunities, making STEM more inclusive, and ensuring the next generation feels confident stepping into this world. Because when we invest in STEM, we’re investing in the future - for our company, for our industry, and for society as a whole.

For six weeks, I had the incredible opportunity of taking part in an Early Careers Development Placement in Cadiz, Spain, working on the Fleet Solid Support (FSS) Programme. The FSS programme is a key project for the Royal Navy, aiming to deliver new support ships to enhance the UK’s naval capabilities.

If you’re someone who cares about where, how, and with whom you work – welcome to BMT. You’re exactly who we were hoping to reach.

At 3am on a March morning, while many were still sleeping, our amazing colleagues in the Netherlands laced up their trainers and took on a 15km sunrise walk to raise money and awareness for ALS. This year’s walk carried even deeper meaning, as it was inspired by one of our own teammates recently diagnosed with the condition.
