Potential is everywhere. Opportunity isn’t.
That’s where organisations like IntoUniversity are making a difference.
Working in communities across England and Scotland, IntoUniversity supports over 60,000 young people each year through local learning centres. Their programmes combine academic support, mentoring and practical guidance on future pathways - helping students build the skills and confidence to take their next steps.
And the impact is clear. In 2023/24, 58% of IntoUniversity students progressed to university - around double the national rate for students eligible for Free School Meals.
At BMT, we believe businesses have a role to play in changing that picture - not just through funding, but through sharing time, experience and insight.
Through our partnership with IntoUniversity, we’ve contributed £10,000 and are supporting hands-on volunteering across a range of programmes. Our colleagues are taking part in Careers in FOCUS and Business in FOCUS workshops - bringing real-world projects and career journeys to life - as well as mentoring students as they apply to university and transition into higher education.
These moments matter.
A conversation can build confidence.
A workshop can open up a new pathway.
A mentor can help someone see a future they hadn’t considered before.
But this isn’t just about supporting young people, it’s also about the future of our industry.
STEM businesses rely on a strong, diverse pipeline of talent. If we don’t actively engage and invest in the next generation, we risk limiting both opportunity for individuals and the future skills our sector depends on.
By getting involved early - through mentoring, skills development and real-world insight - we’re helping to build that pipeline, ensuring more young people can see a place for themselves in STEM careers.
For our colleagues, it’s also an opportunity to give back in a meaningful way - sharing their experiences and supporting the next generation.
Because creating impact isn’t just about what we deliver as a business. It’s about widening access to opportunity, strengthening the future of our sector, and supporting the communities around us.
We’re proud to be working with IntoUniversity to help more young people realise their potential - and to take one step closer to a future that reflects their ability, not their starting point.

For six weeks, I had the incredible opportunity of taking part in an Early Careers Development Placement in Cadiz, Spain, working on the Fleet Solid Support (FSS) Programme. The FSS programme is a key project for the Royal Navy, aiming to deliver new support ships to enhance the UK’s naval capabilities.

At 3am on a March morning, while many were still sleeping, our amazing colleagues in the Netherlands laced up their trainers and took on a 15km sunrise walk to raise money and awareness for ALS. This year’s walk carried even deeper meaning, as it was inspired by one of our own teammates recently diagnosed with the condition.
