My secondment was designed to give me hands-on experience in document control, configuration management, and planning within the FSS Project Management Office (PMO) Team. Beyond the technical aspects, it was an amazing chance to collaborate with our partnering company in Cadiz, strengthening cross-border teamwork and knowledge sharing.
Each morning started early with a scenic commute to the Navantia Shipyard in Puerto Real. Security protocols were strict, with ID checks and controlled access measures in place. Once inside, I worked closely with the Planning Team, focusing on integrating project schedules between the UK and Spanish teams. I also spent time with the Engineering Team, getting stuck into shipyard operations and PMO processes.
Bridging international teams
One of the main aims of my secondment was to help strengthen the integration between the UK and Spanish planning teams. By working directly with my colleagues in Cadiz, I got to see first-hand how they approach planning and project management, which really helped in optimising efforts across both locations. It also gave me a much better understanding of different organisational cultures and ways of working.
Beyond work, I really enjoyed getting to know my Spanish colleagues. Whether over coffee breaks or shared meals, we swapped language lessons, discussed traditions, and compared working styles. These informal moments were just as valuable as the formal work experience in helping me grow both personally and professionally.
Life beyond the shipyard
Outside of work, I made the most of my time in Cadiz. The city’s historic charm, lively atmosphere, and gorgeous beaches made it a fantastic place to explore. I fully embraced the Spanish way of life, from trying delicious local food to soaking up the festive atmosphere in the run-up to Christmas. A real highlight was experiencing the traditional Zambomba festival in Jerez – a unique and vibrant celebration filled with music, carols, and an incredible sense of community spirit.
Evenings were often spent wandering along the beach at sunset, enjoying the breathtaking coastal views, or heading out for tapas and seafood with colleagues. These cultural experiences perfectly complemented the professional development I gained during my secondment.
The lasting impact of the experience
Looking back, my time in Cadiz was truly eye-opening. On a professional level, I gained valuable hands-on experience in international PMO practices, improved my technical skills, and built strong working relationships with colleagues overseas. On a personal level, I developed cultural awareness, made great connections, and proved to myself that I can adapt to new environments and challenges.
This secondment wasn’t just a great learning experience – it was a chance to step outside my comfort zone and really grow. If you ever get the opportunity to work abroad, I’d say go for it! The experience of living and working in a different country, learning from new teams, and immersing yourself in a different culture is something you’ll never forget.

At 3am on a March morning, while many were still sleeping, our amazing colleagues in the Netherlands laced up their trainers and took on a 15km sunrise walk to raise money and awareness for ALS. This year’s walk carried even deeper meaning, as it was inspired by one of our own teammates recently diagnosed with the condition.
