Jan Verhage studied Nautical Science in Rotterdam and began his sea-going career as Deck Officer and Engineer on board reefer vessels. He subsequently worked for three years as a shipping consultant before joining BMT in 1990.
With over 35 years of experience at BMT, Jan has developed extensive expertise in claims and casualty investigations, as well as conducting a wide range of marine audits. He is a highly experienced marine and cargo surveyor, having been involved in numerous high-profile cases. His work includes investigating major claims related to cargo shift and damage, as well as lashing and securing surveys for project cargo, heavy lift shipments and conventional cargoes.
Jan has also carried out stability investigations on behalf of shipowners, charterers, P&I Clubs, and law firms. He is specialised in frozen / refrigerated cargoes shipped in reefer vessels and reefer containers, particularly in determining cause and extent of damage. A trained expert witness for London arbitration, Jan is regularly appointed in this capacity.
