Campaign Lead - Maritime Autonomous Systems
Will Alexander is BMT's Maritime Autonomy Deputy Team Leader and Mariner/Machine Integration Lead. He's taken on a leading role in establishing BMT’s Technical Authority and Consulting Business in Maritime Autonomy. Prior to BMT, Will spent two years working in Defence and Maritime Sector major programme delivery and consultancy at Turner & Townsend. This followed a successful career in the Royal Navy as a professional mariner and hydrographic surveyor. Most recently he worked within Future Capability Development leading a trials team with autonomous surface vessels and underwater vehicles to develop concepts for hydrographic and geospatial data collection.
As an RN STCW/II Master Mariner he commanded and delivered into service HMS MAGPIE. As an IHO Category A hydrographic surveyor Will has delivered surveys in support of critical national infrastructure and defence requirements. Will’s academic background is rooted in marine sciences as a graduate of the University of Plymouth MSc Hydrography and PGDip Applied Meteorology & Oceanography. Will is a member of the Association for Project Management and graduate of the Manchester Business School AMAC Strategic Leadership Course.

Tim Neild is BMT’s Head of Business Development UK/EU. His role is to lead the development and implementation of BMT’s growth plans in UK & Europe.
Tim joined BMT following a 33-year career in the Royal Navy, specialising in Operations and Capability & Acquisition. He commanded five Warships on Operations world-wide and, following an MBA programme at Cranfield University, held Programme leadership positions in the Maritime Capability directorate of Navy Command Headquarters, providing the direction and oversight to the delivery of the Navy’s capability portfolio aligned to future strategic objectives. His most recent naval assignment before leaving the Service was as a Commodore in Command of the Royal Navy’s Surface Fleet and its people.
Tim also has a bachelor’s degree in Maritime Defence Technology & Business Management and brings a wealth of operational context and an innate understanding of maritime capability to the role. He was awarded a CBE in the 2020 New Year’s Honours list for his service as the Captain of HMS ALBION, the Fleet Flagship, and is a Fellow of the Chartered Management Institute.

He has a PhD in Hydrogen Safety from Loughborough University, following this he has spent several years in industry working on a variety of aspects of ship and submarine design and build. He is a member of the two UK maritime hydrogen working groups and is on the steering group for a research program on ammonia in maritime. He has published and presented numerous papers on the topic of alternative fuels for maritime and naval platforms.

Andrew Russell is BMT’s Sales Capture Manager, UK Defence. Following on from a short career as a Weapon Engineering Officer in the Royal Navy serving on 3 surface ships and working in submarine support, Andrew joined industry in 1999.
He is an experienced capture, business development, sales & strategy professional with over 24 years of performing leadership, winning business and delivery roles in multiple Tier 1 & Tier 2 defence focussed companies. This includes competitive capture management for major deals, increasing sales in account management, corporate strategy design, transformation & implementation. Proven record of designing & implementing & developing Integrated Strategic Business Plans (ISBP) in multiple Tier 1 organisations. Customers’ markets have included Defence, Public and Private sector, ICT, BPO, professional services, selling complete warships, systems engineering services, training and cyber services, in the UK and internationally.

This covers a broad range of research topics from ship and submarine design to digital twins and artificial intelligence. Through this role he leads the horizon scanning activities of BMT, tracking external trends and developing the reactive technology roadmaps. He is always on the lookout for the next emerging technology that can revolutionise or incrementally change the way we and our customers operate.
He is a charted engineer and Member of the Royal Institute of Naval Architects originally training as a Naval Architect specialising in ship signatures before his current role of Head of Research & Development. He is a proud member of range of different industry research and technology forums; one of which is the recently formed Maritime Research and Innovation UK (MarRI-UK) for which he leads the “Clean Maritime” research theme. This is an area he is particularly passionate about, investigating how industry, government and academia can work together to provide an economical and sustainable future for the maritime sector.

Noel Tomlinson coordinates BMT's global business development and growth activity in the commercial maritime sector. Providing world leading maritime design and consultancy services to ship owners, operators and shipyards and world leading vessel designs in the Ferry, Offshore Energy, commercial, defence and Yacht markets.
Noel is an incorporated engineer and active member of the Institution of Engineering and Technology (IET) as well as the Institute of Marine Engineering, Science and Technology (IMarEST) with over 20 years' experience in the maritime industry, working within both the defence and commercial sectors. His career began serving in the Royal Navy as a Marine Engineer serving both at sea and ashore. On leaving the RN he continued to develop his engineering knowledge and experience by spending 7 years in the commercial shipping sector as a senior member of the technical department within a UK cross channel Ferry Company. He joined BMT in 2014 and continues to use his broad technical knowledge and experience to deliver design and consultancy support to both commercial and defence clients.
He is an active member of the SMI and has held a seat on the Commercial Maritime Group Council since March 2019. He also leads the SMI Workboat Working Group, facilitating growth and development within the UK supply chain for the design, build and upgrade of Workboats & Coastal Vessels. With a passion for the future of maritime, Noel is active on many industry/government initiatives to grow the UK marine industry and promote safer, cleaner and more fuel-efficient shipping for the future.
