Why I joined BMT
When I joined BMT nearly eight years ago, I was looking for more than just another engineering role - I wanted to work for a company that was leading innovation in flood modelling and water resource management in Australia. Two things made BMT stand out. The first was the workplace culture. I already knew people at BMT who described it as supportive, collaborative, and genuinely invested in career development. The second was the TUFLOW software package - Australia’s leading flood modelling software, developed in-house at BMT. Having admired TUFLOW for years, joining the team where it was created was an opportunity I couldn’t pass up.
My background is in civil engineering, but I was always most engaged by the water-focused elements - hydrology, hydraulics and coastal work. Growing up and working in Brisbane, a city with a history of major floods, I knew that applying these skills could make a real and lasting difference in flood risk reduction and climate resilience for communities.
How my role has grown
I started as an engineer working on small to medium-sized flood impact assessment projects. These early years gave me plenty of opportunities to learn project management skills while still developing my technical expertise. Over time, I took on larger projects and progressed into line management.
From there, I became a Group Project Manager for the Water Resources programme, overseeing approximately a third of a portfolio comprised of around 100 active projects. Today, as Team Lead for Water Resources in Queensland, I lead a team of 17 professionals. I’m responsible for resourcing, people development, and ensuring delivery of technical work - from floodplain management studies to renewable energy site assessments.
One of the most rewarding parts of my role is seeing our engineers grow in skill and confidence, delivering innovative, high-quality solutions that directly benefit customers and communities.
A standout project
One project that has been particularly meaningful is a major housing development on the Sunshine Coast that we have been involved with for over 15 years. It’s a vast scheme of around 20,000 lots and I’ve personally worked on it since my first day at BMT.
While our role has primarily focused on flood impact assessments, it’s been anything but routine. We’ve tackled challenges like designing infrastructure to support endangered frog species, modelling existing and constructed habitats, and ensuring safe fauna and fish passage through culverts.
Because of its scale and complexity, the project has involved close collaboration with multiple disciplines and organisations. Watching it progress from plans to thriving neighbourhoods has been incredibly satisfying, especially knowing the work contributes both to community safety and environmental stewardship.
What makes BMT different
For me, BMT stands out for its flexibility and trust. As a parent of young twins, the ability to work part-time, adjust my hours, and spend part of my week working from home has been invaluable. This flexibility has allowed me to progress my career without compromising on family life - something I know isn’t possible everywhere in the industry.
"The variety of work here is unlike any other engineering consultancy I’ve experienced. We’re not restricted to a narrow project type - our team works across flood risk assessments, mitigation design, emergency management planning, renewable energy projects, and infrastructure upgrades. That freedom allows engineers to specialise in what they love, while still building broad technical capability."
We’re also proud of our diversity - more team members were born overseas than in Australia, and we have strong female representation in leadership roles. This mix of perspectives makes us stronger problem-solvers and better collaborators.
At BMT, you’re trusted to make decisions, supported by some of the brightest minds in the industry, and encouraged to innovate. That’s why we attract talented engineers who want to make a difference in flood resilience, climate adaptation, and water resource management.
