Why I joined BMT
Back in March 2020, I was looking for a role that offered regional exposure - not just professionally, but also in terms of collaboration. My previous roles were all based in Singapore, and I really wanted the opportunity to work with colleagues and customers across different countries. That’s what attracted me to BMT. I saw it as a place where I could deepen my expertise while contributing to meaningful, multi-national projects, and exploring engineering consultancy roles in Singapore.
How my role has grown
I started as a Commercial Partner, a role that gave me a strong foundation in understanding customer needs and the commercial dynamics behind consultancy work. After a couple of years, I moved into a role where I focused on identifying new opportunities and building partnerships to grow our consultancy business.
Today, I lead the Singapore office, and my role has become much broader. I mentor newer team members, support them through challenges, and coordinate projects and events. Mentoring early-career engineers has become a rewarding part of my leadership journey. My earlier experiences in engineering and commercial roles across maritime, energy and IT sectors have really helped me take on these responsibilities with confidence, contributing to my ongoing career progression in engineering consultancy.
Working closely with customers
Most of my work centres on building relationships with customers in Asia Pacific, understanding their needs - even when those needs are still evolving - and delivering solutions that help them move forward. What I’ve learned is that being able to listen, adapt quickly, and read between the lines is critical. Sometimes customers change direction, and it’s up to us to stay agile and continue adding value.
“I take great pride in being the person who helps bridge the gap between what a customer says they want and what they actually need to succeed.”
A recent example is a large infrastructure project where we’re helping a shipyard owner extend their quay facilities. This enhances their operation capacity by providing increased space for vessel construction, repair, and maintenance activities. supporting both their capacity and business growth. Our team has been involved in improving constructability, managing authority submissions, and streamlining the design to fit local requirements. It’s not just about engineering; it’s about enabling our customer to operate more efficiently and competitively.
Every time I help bring a deal across the line, I see it as a win - not just for BMT, but for the customer. It’s about delivering outcomes that make their job easier, safer, or more productive.
What makes BMT different
What really sets BMT apart for me is the autonomy and trust we’re given. There’s a lot of flexibility - both in how and where we work - which really helps with balancing professional and personal commitments.
The culture here is open and supportive. There’s a strong emphasis on development and diversity, which makes it a great place to grow. I work with a team made up of different nationalities and backgrounds, and that diversity brings valuable perspectives, especially when working with customers from across the region.
What keeps me coming back each day is the satisfaction of finishing something meaningful and the energy I get from working with a diverse, collaborative team. BMT has given me the freedom to grow, the trust to lead, and the support to keep developing, and that’s made all the difference.
