The Design Engineer is responsible for providing a skilled contribution to the design work for assigned projects within the company and maintaining the technical requirements and the standard of deliverables required within the discipline.
Sharing their knowledge and experience with colleagues across all disciplines, working in close collaboration on a project by project basis.
Actively managing the quality of work produced and completing assigned tasks in a timely and transparent manner.
Undertakes works as assigned by the Discipline Lead and in accordance with the approved company processes.
When assigned to a project, confirms understanding and follows the instructions and priorities set by the Technical Project Manager and in accord with any project Design Brief documents, whilst applying their own experience and professional judgement of good practice in communication with the Project Manager.
Develops 3D reference information in support of both 3D arrangement work and visualisation.
Works with Leads, Coordinators and other team members to facilitate the technical illustration of engineering tasks, both for project purposes and as a visual basis for marketing materials.
Works with colleagues, providing answers to technical queries as required.
Is responsible for ensuring that all drawings and documents generated are being correctly filed.
Is responsible for following the programme of work as set out by the Technical Project Manager, working to the required priority guidance, level of detail, task duration (time and budget) and start/finish dates.
Is responsible for managing their workload across multiple projects, following the priorities set by the individual Technical Project Managers and proposing solutions for any conflicting time requirements in coordination with the Discipline Lead.
Inputs to technical management in coordination with the Technical Project Manager, ensuring that all drawings and documents are being created to the agreed standard and are being adequately checked prior to release.
Monitors tasks to ensure that all works comply with the internal quality standards highlighted in the Quality Manual.
Is responsible for liaison with the customer or customer’s representative, subcontractors & suppliers where appropriate; to ensure that all the relevant information is available in a timely fashion.
Ensures that any design changes affecting the contract deliverables, are being clearly communicated to the Technical Project Manager and correctly recorded and tracked within the project documentation.
Ensures that consistent drawing, documentation and process standards are applied and that IT requirements are reported.
Is an active participant in team development & training.
Is an active participant in the attending of conferences and the undertaking of training courses as agreed with the Discipline Lead.
In addition to these duties, the post holder may be required to carry out such other duties as may reasonably be required, from time to time, to achieve the above role purpose.
Minimum of 3 years relevant experience in the marine industry.
Self-motivation and time management to meet agreed targets and deliverables deadlines.
Personal time planning, including feedback to support in the definition of resource requirements, time budgets and deliverables deadlines.
The ability to process technical problems and effectively seek out the correct technical solution using sound engineering judgement.
Demonstrates communication and behavioural competencies in alignment with or exceeding BMT Career Level expectations.
Commercial awareness, with the ability to ensure that works are being carried out and completed to an appropriate standard and level of detail.
The ability to produce clear and well-presented drawings and plans to a suitable quality and standard.
2D CAD (AutoCAD) to produce design information (Advanced skill level).
2D/3D CAD and other specialist software as required to produce and to review design information.
MS Office to develop reports, spreadsheet data and presentation information.
Knowledge and understanding of statutory regulations and Classification and Flag rule sets.
Knowledge and understanding of ship systems design and its impact upon integration.
Knowledge and understanding of ship structural design as applied to structural arrangements
