About the Role

The Safety and Environmental Specialist is responsible for ensuring that safety, environmental, and regulatory requirements are effectively integrated into design. Identifying hazards, assessing safety and environmental impacts, developing mitigation strategies, and ensuring compliance with applicable legislation, standards, and customer requirements throughout the project lifecycle.

Key Responsibilities

Role Specific:
  • Develop and own the Safety and Environmental Management Plan.
  • Conduct Safety and Environmental assessments throughout the design lifecycle.
  • Identify and mitigate potential Safety and Environmental risks through design recommendations.
  • Develop and manage Safety and Environmental requirements and verification criteria.
  • Ensure compliance with applicable Safety and Environmental standards.
  • Translate Safety and Environmental needs into defined and measurable requirements.
  • Analyze verification assessments to ensure compliance with Safety and Environmental requirements.
  • Lead and support hazard identification, analyses and assessments.
  • Develop and maintain Hazard Logs.
  • Lead and facilitate Safety briefs and working groups.
  • Support hazard analyses and operational risk assessments.
  • Evaluate Safety and Environmental impacts associated with design change.
  • Collaborate with other engineering disciplines to ensure best practice is applied to Safety and Environmental initiatives.
  • Present findings and recommendations to technical and senior management audiences.
  • Mentor BMT staff who are developing skills, qualifications and experience in their domain
General:
  • Manage your own technical work and evaluate its effectiveness to improve best practice. 
  • Work collaboratively within a multi-disciplinary team.  
  • Comply with relevant business and ethics codes of conduct. 
  • Undertake engineering and non-engineering activities in a way that contributes to best practice. 
  • Act as Technical Lead on specified projects.
  • Maintain a program of Continuing Professional Development to sustain your technical knowledge
  • Act as Technical Assurer on specified projects. 
  • Work within the BMT Quality Management System (QMS) processes and procedures.
  • Maintain your technical competency in your area(s) of specialization. 
  • Promote a positive team culture through input, feedback and participation in team building and wellness activities. 

Skills, Knowledge & Expertise

Essential:
  • Degree in engineering, occupational health and safety, environmental engineering, or a related field;
  • Minimum 10 years of experience in the field of safety and environmental Engineering;
  • Minimum 5 years of experience in the shipbuilding industry;
  • Existing registration or ability to obtain registration with Professional Engineering governance body in province of work; and
  • Eligible for a Canadian security clearance.
Desirable:
  • Detailed knowledge and experience in the operation of Naval systems.
  • Knowledge and understanding of marine/mechanical design on small simple platforms (tug, barge, ferry) to large complex ships (surface combatants, submarines, cargo and passenger vessels) in one or more areas:
    • Component selection;
    • Equipment arrangement;
    • Propulsion and Auxiliary systems;
    • Application of standards for pumps, valves, flanges, and piping;
    • Heat/cooling load calculations; and
    • Metallurgical considerations.
  • Experience working with shipyards, dockyards, owners, class and equipment manufacturers to conduct ship surveys for design and engineering changes, mid-life upgrades and vessel condition documentation.
  • Experience in the in-service support of naval systems and/or engineering design.
  • Experience in the development and use of technical studies and drawings.
  • An understanding of specifications for government and commercial vessels.
  • Experience in systems integration, ship construction and/or repair.
  • Knowledge of domain specific standards including International Maritime Organization (IMO) regulations, Class Society rules, Transport Canada Regulations and Canadian Forces Technical Orders.
