Key Responsibilities

The Senior Submarine Structures Specialist is responsible for professionally and efficiently conducting structural assessments and providing technical advice to overseas and domestic submarine programs. This role may also support surface ship and other engineering programs as required. 

This role includes recurring long-term deployments (at least 3 months at a time within a 12-month period) at one of our overseas client sites, providing specialist technical advice, working alongside our team of technical specialists. Deployments may include holiday periods. 

Deployed periods benefit from substantial tax-free allowances.

Role Specific Responsibilities
  • Leading and conducting submarine structural calculations for existing platforms and/or new builds 
  • Providing expert opinion on design and fitness for service of submarine structures including:  
  • Submarine pressure hull design philosophy 
  • Submarine pressure hull structural features 
  • Primary and secondary submarine structures 
  • Working with shipyards, dockyards, owners, class and Original Equipment Manufacturers (OEM)
  • Conducting ship surveys for design and engineering changes, mid-life upgrades and vessel condition documentation 
  • Working with leadership to identify the levels of suitably qualified and experienced personnel (SQEP) required to fulfil current and projected demand 
  • Working with leadership to identify training or other developmental opportunities to develop SQEP within BMT 
  • Working overseas for a minimum period of 3 months in a 12-month period 
General Responsibilities 
  • Provide advice and support to external and internal customers 
  • Manage your own technical work and evaluate its effectiveness to improve best practice 
  • Work collaboratively within a multi-disciplinary team 
  • Comply with relevant business and ethics codes of conduct 
  • Undertake engineering and non-engineering activities in a way that contributes to best practice  
  • Act as Technical Lead (TL) on specified projects 
  • Act as Technical Assurer on specified projects 
  • Work within the BMT Quality Management System (QMS) processes and procedures 
  • Maintain your technical competency in your area(s) of specialization 
  • Promotes building a positive team culture through input, feedback and participation in team building and wellness activities 

Skills, Knowledge & Expertise

Essential 
  • Degree or Technologist Diploma in Marine Engineering or Naval Architecture 
  • Minimum 12 years of experience working in the domain of submarine structures 
  • Extensive experience working on new build or re-fit of existing submarines, including proven experience of: 
  • Submarine pressure hull design philosophy 
  • Submarine pressure hull structural features 
  • Primary and secondary submarine structures 
  • Experience in the development, use and review of technical studies and drawings  
  • An understanding of specifications for submarines and surface vessels 
  • Ability to work collaboratively and supportively with a wide range of internal and external stakeholders 
  • Eligible for a Canadian security clearance 
  • Able to travel internationally on a minimum of a 3-month deployment 
Desirable:  
  • Experience conducting ship or submarine hydrostatics calculations including stability, weight control and margins 
  • Experience conducting/participating in ship or submarine inclining experiments 
  • Knowledge of domain-specific standards including International Maritime Organization (IMO) regulations, Class Society rules, Transport Canada Regulations and Canadian Forces Technical Orders 
  • Experience in the in-service support of naval systems and/or engineering design 
  • Experience in systems integration, ship construction and/or repair 
  • Existing registration or ability to obtain registration with Professional Engineering governance body in Province of work or equivalent technologist certification
