Key Responsibilities

The Intermediate Marine Systems Engineer is responsible for professionally and efficiently executing work in support of client taskings in the field of Marine Systems Engineering.

Responsibilities and tasks include:
  • Provide Marine Systems advice and support to external and internal customers. 
  • Independently undertake technical work which requires coordination with colleagues and making a substantial contribution to assigned projects. 
  • Work collaboratively within a multi-disciplinary team.   
  • Comply with relevant business and ethics codes of conduct.  
  • Undertake engineering activities in a way that contributes to best practice. 
  • Work within the BMT Quality Management System (QMS) processes and procedures. 
  • Maintain your technical competency in your area(s) of specialization. 
  • Demonstrate willingness and active adoption of coaching and mentoring provided by senior staff, and support with mentorship to junior staff in developing technical competency.  
  • Contributes to building a positive team culture through input, feedback and participation in team building and wellness activities.  
Role Specific: 
  • Knowledge and understanding of Marine / Mechanical design on small simple platforms (tug, barge, ferry) to large complex ships (surface combatants, submarines, cargo and passenger vessels) in one or more areas: 
  • Component selection; 
  • Equipment arrangement; 
  • Propulsion and Auxiliary systems; 
  • Application of standards for pumps, valves, flanges, and piping; 
  • Heat/Cooling load calculations; and 
  • Metallurgical considerations. 
  • Contribute to working with Shipyards, Dockyards, Owners, Class and Original Equipment Manufacturers (OEM) to conduct ship surveys for design and engineering changes, mid-life upgrades and vessel condition documentation. 
  • Experienced contribution to feasibility studies, concept designs, installation design and integration of new and replacement equipment, including communicating design outputs using 2D drawings or 3D models. 
  • Knowledge of domain specific standards including International Maritime Organization (IMO) regulations, Class Society rules, Transport Canada Regulations and Canadian Forces Technical Orders. 
  • Maintain a program of Continuing Professional Development to sustain your technical knowledge. 
  • Stamp and Seal Professional Engineering deliverables in area of practise. 
  • Provide Marine Systems advice and support to external and internal customers.

Skills, Knowledge and Expertise

Essential: 
  • Degree in Mechanical or Marine Systems Engineering. 
  • Minimum 4 years of experience in Mechanical or Marine Systems Engineering. 
  • Existing registration or ability to obtain registration with Professional Engineering governance body in Province of work; and, 
  • Eligible for a Canadian security clearance. 
 
Desirable: 
  • Detailed knowledge and experienced in the operation of naval systems. 
  • Experience in the in-service support of naval systems and/or engineering design. 
  • Experience in the development and use of technical studies and drawings. 
  • An understanding of specifications for government and commercial vessels 
  • Experience in systems integration, ship construction and/or repair. 
  • Submarine specific knowledge is considered an asset.
