Key Responsibilities

The Hull Surveyor is responsible for professionally and efficiently undertaking surveys as part of a team, compiling survey findings, producing survey reports, developing repair specifications, and undertaking acceptance activities in a marine environment

Responsibilities and tasks include: 
  • Develop survey packages from technical documentation.
  • As part of a team, conduct visual inspections and condition surveys on marine structures (including submarines) in a heavy industrial environment. 
  • Compile inspection findings and produce survey reports
  • Develop Repair Specifications: 
    • Request and assess the results from Non-Destructive Testing (NDE). 
    • Assess structure against relevant codes and standards to determine whether repairs are required. 
    • Develop technical specifications to resolve complex repairs
    • Provide input to risk assessments.
  • Undertake Acceptance Activities 
  • Conduct quality assurance activities such as work acceptance and inspections to verify completion of key steps in repair sequences. 
  • Assist in the planning and execution of platform tests or trials. 
  • Witness platform tests or trials as client representatives.
  • Undertake Design Activities: 
    • Participate in feasibility studies, concept designs and calculations for structures, systems and equipment related to platform systems.
    • Support the installation design and integration of new and replacement equipment related to platform systems.
General
  • Provide Naval Architecture advice and support to external and internal customers. 
  • Independently undertake technical work which requires coordination with colleagues and making a substantial contribution to assigned projects. 
  • Work collaboratively within a multi-disciplinary team.   
  • Comply with relevant business and ethics codes of conduct.  
  • Undertake engineering activities in a way that contributes to best practice. 
  • Work within the BMT Quality Management System (QMS) processes and procedures. 
  • Maintain your technical competency in your area(s) of specialization.  
  • Demonstrate willingness and active adoption of coaching and mentoring provided by senior staff and support with mentorship to junior staff in developing technical competency.  
  • Contribute to building a positive team culture through input, feedback and participation in team building and wellness activities. 

 

Skills, Knowledge & Expertise

Essential: 
  • A College Technologist Diploma in a relevant field and eligibility to be certified as an AScT in Nova Scotia within 30 months, OR licensed to practice as a Professional Engineer or eligibility to register as an Engineer-in-Training in Nova Scotia within 12 months, 
  • An attention to detail and a demonstrated ability and aptitude to problem solve technical issues, 
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills, 
  • Strong teamwork skills and the flexibility to effectively work in an environment subject to frequently changing or competing priorities 
  • Ability to obtain Canadian security clearance 
 
Desirable: 
  • 4+ years of relevant technical experience, with at least two years with hull survey experience. 
  • Practical experience working with marine platform systems or steel structures in a marine environment. 
  • Experience working in a fast-paced commercial shipyard environment.

Annual Salary: 105,000-130,000
