Wind engineering

We use outstanding wind tunnel facilities and expertise to provide customers in the offshore industry with reliable, high quality data that supports detailed design.

This helps you accurately and cost effectively determine the fundamental parameters to optimise the size and weight of your marine or offshore asset. Using wind tunnels, we can reproduces wind-shear profiles to match the variation in full-scale wind speed with height over the open sea.

Combining physical and numerical modelling techniques we determine wind and current loads in support of all stages of design providing vital input to the design process that is accurate and timely. Employing these methods helps to ensure that conservatism of load estimates, that may be derived from analytical methods, is reduced and therefore the cost of the design is reduced.

Helideck operations and design guidance

Helicopter operations to and from offshore platforms can involve significant risk and cost, so it is important that helidecks are designed for optimal performance and minimal risk.

We help our customers accurately measure and model weather conditions during helicopter landing and take-off operations to optimise design and improve safety. Our studies also support the optimisation of helicopter landings in adverse weather conditions and any turbulence created by the layout of the topside. We are recognised authorities on offshore helideck aerodynamics and use our world-class wind tunnel facilities and state-of-the-art computational modelling resources to provide designers and operators with clear and insightful assessments of proposed helideck designs.

Vessel simulation studies for offloading operations

Built on many years of experience in all aspects of vessel manoeuvrability, REMBRANDT supports a range of navigation and manoeuvrability studies for offshore and terminal operations.

Our powerful, real-time software tool, REMBRANDT enables the design of anchor, mooring lines and terminal configurations to be evaluated in simulated metocean conditions. Complex operations such as motion responses during LNG transfer operations in unfavourable metocean conditions can be analysed easily and effectively, and designs adjusted accordingly.

Vessel and mooring selection

Preliminary vessel and mooring selection for marine terminals is an essential part of early project concept selection and planning to better understand the options available for near shore and field offshore locations.
