Pearl Oil (Makassar Straits) Metocean and Soliton Study

Pearl Oil are proposing to develop a new oil and gas field in the Makassar Straits, with the platform location for this operation being some 350km distant from land based processing facilities at Balikpapan.

Pearl Oil are proposing to develop a new oil and gas field in the Makassar Straits, with the platform location for this operation being some 350km distant from land based processing facilities at Balikpapan.

In order to deliver product to the land facilities, there will need to be a bottom mounted pipeline, and hence design of this pipeline from a safety/risk perspective is a key issue.

In order to inform and guide the design of the pipeline and offshore production platform, BMT companies (BMT Indonesia, BMT WBM and BMT Argoss) combined to complete a significant metocean data collection and soliton evaluation exercise.

Key tasks completed in this regard included the following:

  • Deployment of six (6) bottom mounted ADCP current/wave    measurement devices for a 6  month period;
  • Deployment of wind/meteorological data collection equipment;
  • Salinity/temperature measurements at each of the ADCP sites; and
  • Technically advanced remote sensing (SAR) studies of soliton formation in and around the study area.
