The HUNT Class' primary role is to keep ports and coastal shipping lanes free from the threat of mines and to support the Fishery Protection Squadron around UK waters. They are the largest warships ever constructed in Glass Reinforced Plastic (GRP), with extensive noise reduction features to avoid accidentally triggering acoustic mines. The GRP construction together with other features also ensures a reduced magnetic signature.
The Mine Counter Measures Vessels Integrated Project Team (MCMV IPT), commissioned BMT to conduct an Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) for the HUNT and SANDOWN Class during the In-Service and Disposal phases of the CADMID cycle.
The EIA was completed in line with the DPA/DLO Acquisition and Environmental Policy, which was superseded during the task by Project-Oriented Environmental Management System (POEMS). The HUNT Class EIA was the first project to be completed against the requirements of POEMS, and has elicited a very positive response.
Mandated by the Defence Procurement Agency (DPA) and Defence Logistics Organisation (DLO), POEMS implements the requirements of both the MoD Environmental Management System (EMS) and the Acquisition Environmental Management Policy. The Environmental Impact Screening and Scoping (EISS) Study identified potential environmental impacts through the development of an Aspects and Legal Register. It identified significant environmental impacts and generalised the requirements and scope for the EIA. Further analysis of the environmental impacts identified in the EISS was conducted along with the development of mitigation measures and an Environmental Management Plan for implementation. The two studies concentrated on the ship systems, which include the following aspects during worldwide operations:
- Hazardous and Non Hazardous Waste
- Black, Grey Water and Bilge Water
- Noise Emissions, including Sonar
The report raised issues concerning the ships operation, which have been incorporated into the Environmental Management Plan to ensure they are mitigated within a defined timescale.
