BMT is pleased to announce the return of Nick Dowden to the marine survey and consultancy team in London. Nick returns from a period as a Specialist Investigator with the New Zealand maritime administration where he investigated several high-profile cases.
Nick is a Master Mariner with experience on VLCCs, container and general cargo ships, survey and offshore vessels, as well as in sail training. Ashore, Nick has gained an honours degree, post graduate certification and a range of specialist training qualifications including ISM lead auditor, navigation auditor and fire investigator.
During his time with both BMT and Maritime NZ, Nick has investigated a large number of high profile cases and given expert opinion on incidents ranging from certification fraud to groundings, lifting equipment failure, fires, explosions, sinkings and personal injuries - making him a specialist in post-incident analysis. Nick is also a leading member of BMT’s Collision Reconstruction and Simulation Team
As well as commercial shipping, Nick is well versed in offshore renewables and has provided project planning advice, program management, marine warranty services and due diligence surveys on windfarms and tidal projects in the North Sea and beyond.

We have reached an important milestone with MATE. As of today, our cloud-based tool called MATE has been used for more than 2,000 surveys. MATE captures and tracks any and all aspects of a vessel’s condition, following a pre-defined and often tailor made inspection format, and can visualise its development over time.
