BMT and University of Queensland team up to help save the Great Barrier Reef

The $2 million challenge funded by both the Queensland Government and the Australian Government through the Advance Queensland Small Business Innovation Research programme was introduced to seek out novel solutions which will boost coral abundance and restore reefs exposed to the impacts of a changing climate.

“We are extremely excited to be involved in helping the Great Barrier Reef respond to the significant pressures that it faces, increasing its resilience, while we wait for climate change to be addressed and catchment pressures to be reduced.”

Professor Tom Baldock from the University of Queensland says:

“The challenge is to find solutions that can be scaled to rehabilitate multiple reefs and vast areas of broken coral. We aim to use established Civil Engineering methods in an innovative way to work with nature to speed up the reef’s natural recovery processes.”
