Having specialists appointed as soon as possible after the incident is vital in order to ensure no evidence is lost: it is vital that contemporaneous evidence such as the voyage data recorder, course and telegraph recorder are secured for future investigation. To supplement the on-board data (or where there is scanty information available), we can access a vast array of other information available through the various internet and shore-based services, especially if the incident occurred in port or in coastal waters.
Once all the information has been collected, we are able to reconstruct the collision using our own well-regarded software tool, BMT Rembrandt (REal time Manoeuvring, BeRthing AND Training). BMT Rembrandt simulates collisions using accurately modelled vessel hull forms and prevailing environmental data such as visibility, wind, wave height and current. This 3D representation of the event is invaluable for training, expert reporting in litigation or to supplement independent apportionment of blame in order to settle cases simply and quickly.
