If you are new to the term, Hull & Machinery insurance covers damage to a vessel’s hull, fittings, machinery and installed equipment. Insurance is mostly placed though brokers arranging cover through a range of insurance companies. Unlike P&I insurance which insures a shipowner’s liability to others, H&M insurance mainly covers the ship as the owner’s primary asset. The two insurances (P&I and H&M) both become relevant in the event of a collision liability (P&I) and damage (H&M) to fixed and floating objects.
