Andy Holdcroft

Andy Holdcroft

Managing Director

Andy joined BMT in 2014 as Operations Director of BMT Specialised Ship Design, based in Southampton UK. In 2018 Andy was appointed as Managing Director of Specialised Ship Design.

Before joining BMT, Andy was Vice President Programs and Operations of DRS Technologies in the UK, which during his tenure became part of the Finmeccania Group (now Leonardo). Prior to this he accumulated over 20 years of experience in the engineering and technology sectors, holding senior technical and board level posts. He gained considerable experience in the mechanical engineering, electronic engineering and program management disciplines, working his way through the ranks after completing his broad-based engineering apprenticeship.

Andy has extensive experience in the leadership of international technical businesses and with his broad operational experience drives a culture of customer orientation and continuous improvement. He has spearheaded many organisational change programs and believes that people are the heart of any successful business, encouraging commitment through ownership. Andy is an advocate of the STEM strategy and modern apprenticeships to encourage and empower our future generations of engineering professionals.

Noel Tomlinson

In his current role as Director, Business Development, Noel coordinates the development and worldwide sales of our specialised ship design capability. Providing tailored naval architecture and engineering services to ship owners, operators, shipyards, and world leading vessel designs in the ferry, offshore energy, commercial, defence and yacht markets.

Noel is an incorporated engineer and active member of the Institution of Engineering and Technology and Institute of Marine Engineering, Science and Technology with over 20 years' experience in the Maritime industry, working within both the defence and commercial sectors. His career began serving in the Royal Navy as a Marine Engineer serving both at sea and ashore. On leaving the Royal Navy he continued to develop his engineering knowledge and maritime experience by spending 7 years in the commercial shipping sector.

He joined BMT in 2014 and continues to use his broad technical knowledge and sector experience to deliver design and consultancy support to both commercial and defence clients.

In 2018, James became Managing Director of Lateral Naval Architects, a strategic partnership between BMT and leading superyacht builder, Oceanco. Having overall responsibility for building and developing a talented, multi skilled and multinational team of 55 engineers who, whilst concurrently engineering multiple new build and refit projects, are applying knowledge and insight in the development of innovative technical platforms that underpin the world’s most advanced superyachts.

James has been a part of BMT since 2004, when Nigel Gee & Associates was acquired by BMT, with extensive background in the naval architecture of complex and specialised vessels, spanning large fast transoceanic ships, to high speed ferries, military vessels, SWATHs, hydrofoils and hovercraft as well as sail and motor yachts.

In 2006, with the engineering of large yachts having dominated the company’s workload for over a decade, James took on the role of managing its yacht related activities and responsibility for building the BMT brand in the market via business development, marketing of design, consultancy and innovation activities alongside management of key conceptual and preliminary design work.

James graduated from Solent University in 1996 with a first-class honours in Yacht and Powercraft Design, having also graduated from the Solent University’s HND in Naval Architecture two years previously. In 2019, James was awarded the honorary degree of Doctor of Engineering by Solent University.

Technical Director

Colin Cain joined BMT as Technical Manager in 2018, and in 2019 was appointed Technical Director. In this role he is responsible for the team that delivers vessel design projects across offshore energy, commercial and defence sectors. His responsibility extends in particular to the structural design, mechanical design, production design and management elements associated with the design projects that are delivered by SSD.

Colin has a background in Naval Architecture and engineering management with 25 years’ experience in the design, development, build and operation of commercial, military and rescue craft. In his early career, he gained a PhD and then spent a number of years at the RNLI developing offshore lifeboats. This led to a period at VT Halmatic spent designing and building specialist military RIBs, high speed interceptor craft, patrol boats and workboats. He then held a senior management role in the BAE Systems small craft unit, followed by an Engineering Director (and business development) role in a successful marine consultancy. Immediately prior to joining BMT he was Technical Director for the Wartsila Ballast Water Treatment Systems business.

Gary Rossall joined BMT Specialised Ship Design in 2015, and now holds the position of Engineering Director (Yachts).

After entering the small craft design and building industry after graduating, he has built up extensive experience over 25 years in both design practice and its application in the UK and overseas, progressing into technical management and project coordination.

Gary has an in-depth understanding of marine design, engineering and construction working on many complex projects throughout his career.

Sylvain Julien

Sylvain Julien

Director, Naval Architecture & Business Sector Lead, Ferries

Sylvain first trained as a Mechanical Engineer and worked for several years in the special purpose machines sector, serving the aeronautic and automotive industry. In 2007, after completing a naval architecture degree, Sylvain joined BMT as a naval architect. He was then appointed Director of Naval Architecture in 2020.

Sylvain has grown with the company since his graduation, and has gained extensive experience in the naval architecture of a variety of specialised vessels. Examples such as motoryachts, workboats, high speed ferries, patrol boats, and also a wide variety of hull forms including monohulls, catamarans, SWATHs, hydrofoils and hovercrafts. He understands the need to continually develop and keep up to date with a wide base of technical knowledge across disciplines to best answer our customer’s requirements.

In his current role he is responsible for the team that delivers vessel design across the various sectors served by BMT Specialised Ship Design. His responsibility extends in particular to the technical sales and special projects delivered by SSD. In addition Sylvain is looking after the business development for the commercial sector at BMT Specialised Ship Design.

Martin Bissuel

Martin Bissuel

Business Sector Lead, Government & Security

Martin is the lead for Defence and Security sector for our team located in Southampton, UK.

An experienced Naval Architect, Martin has worked on several defence projects over the years, particularly high-performance military vessels for special forces, but also larger naval platforms.

As project manager, he has also delivered new vessel builds as well as large support programmes, coordinating large engineering, production and supply chain teams across different countries.

An experienced business developer, Martin has extensive international experience working with governments globally on large defence programmes.

In this role, his focus is to draw on the team’s world class expertise in vessel design to build winning partnerships and consortiums that provide solutions that will equip government agencies around the world with the tools they need to face the challenges of today and tomorrow.

Business Sector Lead, Offshore Energy

As the business sector lead, James is the main point of contact for all things offshore energy related and is based on the South Coast of the UK.

Beyond spending lots of time on boats and having a BEng(Hons) in yacht production and surveying, James has over a decade’s experience in vessel design and construction from yachts to commercial workboats and ferries (aluminium, steel & GRP). Previous roles have seen James responsible for early conceptual design and contract work, procurement, class approval & vessel build, through to launch, commissioning and warranty.

This valuable insight from both design and build perspectives along with extensive engagement with class and flag societies, provides James with an excellent commercial and legislative understanding of vessel design and build.

Matteo Magherini

Matteo Magherini

Business Development Coordinator, Yachts

Matteo is a Chartered Engineer and currently is a member of the Management Team at Lateral as Business Developer Coordinator. He holds a Bachelor Degree in Mechanical Engineering and a MSc in Yacht and Small Craft.

Matteo started his career in The Netherlands as Naval Architect / Project Manager working with leading superyacht industry shipbuilders. Since joining BMT in 2015, he has worked in a number of large yacht projects (new build, refit) from initial development to engineering phase. Matteo key focus is now on business development strategies, and in the provision of wider company consultancy services by performing business trips, forming technical proposals, maintaining the intelligence system up to date. He has a solid track record of delivering to existing and new customers by leveraging strong team performance. Matteo is a proud Member of The Royal Institution of Naval Architects.

With a career built on promoting exceptional products, Sonia loves nothing more than finding stories and connecting the dots in order to create meaningful marketing initiatives. Currently the Marketing Coordinator for Commercial Shipping UK, covering BMT Specialised Ship Design and Lateral Naval Architects, Sonia focuses on promoting the services which stand at the forefront of naval architecture and engineering.

Before joining BMT, Sonia has had a seven-year tenure within the marine industry, where she gained valuable experience within the field working for leading companies.
