Society & the Sea International Conference (SOCSEA) 2024

UNESCO World Hertiage Site of Maritime Greenwich

National Maritime, in partnership with the University of Greenwich, will host a two-day conference and exhibition exploring sustainable practices and business opportunities in the maritime realm. The 4th Society & the Sea International Conference 2024 will take place on 9th and 10th September 2024 in the UNESCO World Heritage Site of Maritime Greenwich.

The theme of the conference is ‘To be truly blue, we must also think green: developing a sustainable blue economy needs both environmental protection & economic activities to go hand-in-hand.’

A dual-themed ‘green and blue’ agenda will explore the strategies required to develop a sustainable blue economy. The ‘Green Waves’ conference stage will focus on energy transition and sustainability in the maritime and coastal arena. Dr Thomas Beard, Clean Maritime Lead at BMT, will act as a moderator for this theme.

The ‘Blue Invest’ conference stage will explore business opportunities and the societal benefits that can be leveraged through supply chain collaborations. In this keynote session, our CEO, Sarah Kenny OBE, will be sharing her thoughts on the importance of D&I for the future of the Maritime industry.

Dr. Thomas Beard, Ph.D CEng MIMechE is a Clean Shipping Service Lead at BMT.

Dr. Thomas Beard is a chartered engineer and the Clean Shipping Lead at BMT. He has a PhD in Hydrogen Safety from Loughborough University, following this he has spent several years in industry working on a variety of aspects of ship and submarine design and build. He is the co-chair of the National Maritime Hydrogen & Future Fuels working group, a member of the Maritime UK Hydrogen group, on the steering group for MariNH3 (ammonia in maritime) and on the Industry Advisory Board for Ocean-REFuel (offshore power to X). He has published and presented numerous papers on the topic of alternative fuels for maritime and naval platforms.
