James Roy

Yacht Design Director

My job is a mixture of design project management, business development, marketing, research and concept development. Our company has grown, and whereas we previously dealt with smaller boats, we are now designing much bigger and more challenging vessels.

What I like most about my job is the intellectual freedom. I am have a lot of autonomy in my role, and the ethos of innovation and experimentation really runs deep. At BMT Nigel Gee we are free to try out new ideas and often get involved in some really unusual projects. Alongside the design and development of relatively conventional yachts for secured contracts we also undertake internally funded design and development of novel concepts. Our award winning Project Utopia concept design is one such example. Additionally we undertake research into current and forthcoming regulatory matters that are impacting the industry and share our results openly via technical papers. Both of these activities allow us to apply our creativity outside of the fixed design brief that comes with a contracted project, expand our knowledge and helps us project BMT as a leader in knowledge and innovation.

We are well supported professionally, well rewarded financially, with endless opportunities for travel, training and general self-improvement. It is a wonderful combination - to be given so much independence and freedom in day-to-day work, yet also to be so well looked after.
