I joined BMT Design & Technology in Melbourne, Australia as a Mechanical Engineer in 2008, and worked on a number of engineering projects including detailed designs, engineering assessments and cost-benefit analyses.
Back in 2011, I enquired about a secondment to another BMT company. For a long time it had been a personal ambition and dream to live and work in another country and I was lucky to be offered a placement with BMT Reliability Consultants, based in Fareham in the UK.
Whether it was the adaptability and versatility of BMT at work I'm not sure, but I couldn't have been more suited to the projects that became available during my time at the company. I was part of various UK Defence projects, one of which afforded me the opportunity to do business in Norway with one of the world's leading shipping companies. I was also engaged in an exciting oil and gas project which used an integrated risk and cost modelling approach to formulate and evaluate toxic gas alarm system designs before making recommendations to a leading European oil and gas company.
Topping off the highlights of my secondment at the historic Haslar test facility in Gosport, I was able to complete further training in submarine hydrodynamics and conduct tow tank testing in conjunction with BMT Defence Services and BMT Nigel Gee for a specialised catamaran design project.
I have since returned to Australia and am enjoying challenging and interesting projects back in my home country, however, I wouldn't have missed this once in a lifetime experience.
