Job Details

The Role

Senior UX Designer

Your role is at the core of everything BMT does. You will help us craft technically creative and significant web applications for customers around the world, developing your skills and career in a supportive environment.

Are you looking to apply your user experience knowledge to new and varied challenges? If so, this role may be for you.

What's the role?

As part of our ambitious growth plans, new and exciting roles are being created within our expanding Information Systems team. You will join an energetic multi-disciplinary team, delivering bespoke services in the defence and security sectors. You will have a proven track record of working in an agile culture, supporting both scrum and Kanban projects. You will need to collaborate with software developers, human factors engineers, test specialists, data scientists and other technology SMEs, sharing your skills, knowledge and learning to deliver solutions that allow our clients to make important decisions.

We are looking for a Senior UX Designer with practical experience of applying UX principles and practices to research, design, user test, deliver and maintain highly engaging end-to-end user experiences.

Flexible and remote working is available, so we welcome applications from those not based in the Bath area - we have offices in Plymouth, Portsmouth, Weymouth, Barrow and London too. Travel to customer sites or to attend certain meetings may be required.

What are we looking for?

We are looking for a UX professional who is excited by the opportunity to work closely with our development teams on a wide range of products and services. If you have the experience to help us shape and develop our UX capability in order to modernise our Digital Services business, we would welcome your application.

We really value your ability to present and articulate work clearly, communicating sometimes complex principles or information to customers and colleagues. Experience and proficiency in rapid prototyping tools such as Figma or Adobe XD will be highly valued. During the application process we would like to see examples of your work case studies demonstrating the breadth and depth of your experience. While practical experience of the Government Digital Service (GDS) would be great, the ability to quickly understand and apply it is more important to us.

We are excited to work with you because you are an enthusiastic and inquisitive communicator, collaborator and implementer. As a Senior UX Designer, you will need to actively maintain knowledge of your specialist area, advising on the skills, technologies and methodologies required to develop our business. The role involves plenty of hands-on work too, though, and you will take full responsibility for the UX aspect of projects, supporting teams with your skills and knowledge, and working closely with customers and Product Owners to meet the changing needs of their users. You can expect to work on projects ranging from app development to advising on the design of future platforms, and cross into areas as diverse as Mixed-Reality immersive training, AI and Machine Learning, Big Data and Cyber security.

What can we offer you?

We believe in hiring the best talent from diverse backgrounds, as this introduces new ideas to the team and our customers. This role will be part of the wider Information Systems team, which is growing fast and works across different defence and security markets.

We ensure that our people have access to the training and mentoring they need to be the best at what they do. We constantly strive to improve our working environment and provide everyone with the tools and applications they need to do their roles effectively. You will have the chance to work and play with the latest software technologies, and we will support your professional development with licences and subscriptions. We also value professional qualifications and registration with professional institutions and can provide the training and support needed to achieve these if not already held.

The wellbeing of the team is central to our success, which is why we offer a host of benefits designed to support you. Workloads are managed effectively and we don’t have a work late culture. We also run an annual hackathon where the whole team can really let loose and experiment.

BMT is an equal opportunities employer.

What do we do?

BMT is the leading independent centre of engineering design, design support, app development and technical services for defence and security customers.  BMT is known for its innovation, expertise and our ability to tackle the most complex design and systems issues.
