Technical Manager,
BMT Fluid Mechanics

I've been with BMT Fluid Mechanics for five and a half years now. In that time, I've progressed from Project Engineer to Head of Bridges and Dynamic Structures to my current role as Technical Manager. It's been a fascinating journey and a rich learning experience. The opportunity to progress and grow, both personally and professionally, is definitely one of the great things about working for BMT. As is the intellectual freedom you're given - BMT employees are really encouraged to pursue their own research interests and to take advantage of all training opportunities. I like that; it gives you a feeling of both independence and support.

A lot of our work takes place in our wind-tunnel testing facilities and as Technical Manager I track state of the art analytical approaches and wind tunnel measurement tools. This ensures BMT is always forward-looking in its use of technology. What really excites me is the experimental side of it. There's no blueprint or manual when it comes to dynamic structures, such as tall buildings of particularly complex architectural and structural arrangements, which are by definition ‘unusual' in their design and architecture. This means that each project is a unique challenge that requires fresh and imaginative thinking. It's problem-solving at the highest level.
