Apache HelicopterBMT's defence business accounts for over half the Group's turnover with activities across Europe, North America and Australasia. The Group provides design, engineering, and business services to national defence forces and major contractors starting from research and development, through concept and assessment to engineering design, and ultimately across the in-service support spectrum. BMT is not engaged directly in manufacturing or construction and is thus able to provide the vital independent view across all its activities.

US DDX Destroyer In the early stages of a programme, BMT provides key definition input such as options design work on the US DDX destroyer programme, the UK hospital ship, Future Surface Combatant programme, and future submarine studies. This is supported by R&D studies at sub-platform level, for example work on both UK and US Electric Ship Technology programmes and the UK Integrated Waste Treatment Technology Demonstrator.

Rib As a programme matures, BMT is able to provide the wide portfolio of skills necessary to design an entire platform. This is well illustrated by the UK future aircraft carrier programme where five BMT companies have worked together to design the ship platform and its associated systems. BMT's expertise covers a wide range of naval platforms including fleet auxiliaries (e.g. USN's T-AKE Dry Cargo Supply Ship), logistical support vessels (UK ALSL, US Sealift RoRo ships, and Canadian ALSC), submarines (Astute class) and major fighting ships (Type 45 destroyer, US DDX destroyer). BMT also undertakes prime contracts covering design, manufacture, setting to work, commissioning and in-service support for specialist defence projects, both in ship systems and weapons support projects.

Jet BMT has a deep involvement in support of operational defence assets. As well as providing a range of specialist engineering and analytical capabilities (for example, evaluating the risks within the Future Strategic Tanker Aircraft PFI using availability modelling), BMT is also a prime partner in integrated technical support management including the UK submarine flotilla, and the Canadian Afloat Logistic Support Capability. The Group also leads a number of specialist technical support contracts such as the UK Sea Technology Group and BMT is also a delegated Naval Authority in the UK for key areas such as structural integrity and stability.

X-Craft BMT's deep understanding of the defence business and the Group's independence have led to a wide involvement in project management, execution of prime contracts and business support activity. As well as delivering a portfolio of risk, safety and programme management services, the Group has developed and managed the US Navy's environmental programme, and heavily supported the UK's acquisition change management programme. BMT has provided project management at a prime level on several complex engineering projects including trials platform for the PAAMS programme and submarine special fits.

BMT's core competencies lie in naval architecture, marine engineering, combat systems engineering, information systems, risk, safety and environmental engineering, logistics engineering, project management, and business support. The Group has recently provided services to many national defence agencies including the USA, Canada, UK, New Zealand, South Africa, Australia, Sweden, Norway and France. Major contractor customers have included BAE SYSTEMS, Northrop Grumann, Lockheed Martin, Rolls Royce, Vosper Thornycroft, Devonport Management Ltd (DML), Alstom, CSC, Navsea, Nassco, Avondale.
